Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Commercial Director is a key member of the leadership team who will strategically direct and manage the sales and marketing of the publishing program at Teachers College Press, the leading university press in the Education field. Creating a vision for our digital sales expansion as well as collaborating across departments to integrate marketing and editorial activities, this position will endeavor to maximize marketplace exposure and revenue for the TCP publishing program. This is a hybrid position located out of our NYC office.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage relationships with digital partners, traditional key accounts such as Amazon and Ingram, as well as our international distributors, to realize marketing opportunities and maximize sales results in an evolving marketplace.
  • Manage and mentor department staff of 6, including overseeing the streamlining of print and digital marketing efforts, the effective implementation of adoption campaigns, and the maintenance of budgets. 
  • Direct, participate and present at meetings such as Launch Meetings, Sales Conference, TCP Quarterly Updates, Weekly Sales &
  • Marketing Team Meetings, Weekly Sales Performance Meetings, and the like. 
  • Gather and analyze marketplace trends, attend relevant conferences, collect and utilize internal metadata and digital analytics. 
  • Collaborate with the Director of the Press on financial planning, revenue goals, key account management, marketing activities, and efficiency efforts. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of sales and marketing experience in academic and/or professional book publishing in the higher education space, or related knowledge-based sectors (such as EdTech or scholarly societies).
  • Account Management experience with Amazon, Ingram, EBSCO, VitalSource, etc.
  • Experience leading and developing high-performing teams, with a focus on fostering an inclusive and collaborative work environment.
  • Demonstrated success in budget management and resource allocation to achieve organizational goals.
  • Keen analytical skills with the ability to translate complex data into actionable commercial plans and growth opportunities.
  • Exceptional ability to communicate across various levels of an organization and build sustainable partnerships with internal and
  • external stakeholders.
  • Proven collaborator and superior judgement of commercial potential for editorial projects
  • Demonstrated initiative, drive, and the ability to lead a team, fostering an environment of growth and productivity.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in the Education field
  • Experience with Biblio Digital Asset Management

Salary Range:

$100,000 - $110,000

Depending on role and business needs, colleagues will either work onsite or in a hybrid model (a combination of in-office and virtual days). Employees are expected to live within a 150-mile radius of the College.
