The Program in Music and Music Education at Teachers College Columbia University invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Teaching in Music Education. We seek a dynamic full-time faculty member with a commitment to teaching excellence, and an emerging record of contributions to the field of music education through scholarly accomplishments and professional service.

Job Summary/Basic Function:
It is anticipated that the successful candidate will begin the appointment on July 1, 2026


Responsibilities:
We seek a colleague whose primary passion is teaching and mentoring, with a demonstrated ability to create engaging, learner-centered, and inclusive classroom experiences. A strong record of teaching effectiveness at the tertiary level, particularly at the graduate level is desired. An explicit commitment to advancing culturally-affirming educational opportunities is essential.

While excellence in teaching is the central focus of this position, candidates are also expected to maintain a productive program of research and creative scholarship that bridges theory and practice, thereby enriching their teaching. We are particularly interested in candidates whose scholarly and creative work complements their pedagogical commitments and contributes to broader important and impactful conversations in music education and related fields.

The position carries a five course teaching load per academic year along with an advising portfolio. The successful candidate will collaborate actively in curriculum design, program planning, and departmental initiatives. We welcome applicants who are committed to graduate student success, community and cultural wealth, multimodal literacies, and the design of democratic and student-centered learning environments.

Minimum Qualifications:
● Earned doctorate with evidence of successful teaching experience at the collegiate level;
● Research and teaching experience in at least one of the following criteria: music teacher preparation, including certification; curriculum development and critical pedagogies; creative technology use; multimodal production and performance; and/or disabilities studies.
● Demonstrated expertise in community-building and outreach, and school-based music teaching.

(1) Letter of application with a clear articulation of teaching experience and innovation grounded by personal philosophy. Information of candidate’s emergent scholarship and its contribution to the field and intersection with graduate education are also recommended.
(2) Curriculum vitae;

(3) One representative writing sample and teaching material/videos of the candidate’s choice;
