Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Custodian II is responsible for maintaining high cleaning standards in both residential and academic buildings, ensuring a safe and clean environment. Responsibilities include performing various cleaning tasks both indoors and outdoors. The role requires courteous interactions with students, staff, and faculty to foster excellent customer service. The ideal candidate must have knowledge of all custodial project work, be able to work independently and demonstrate strong problem-solving skills.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Check garbage and recycling containers/compactors, empty them as necessary, and replace them with a clean bag.
  • Take garbage/recycling outside for sidewalk pickup in conformity with the Sanitation Department schedule
  • Sweep, clean, and hose sidewalks, alleyways, courtyards, window wells, and pits around buildings and basement floors
  • Sweep, vacuum, and wet mop floors and stairs in assigned areas
  • Clean and disinfect suite, and common men's and women's restrooms - use plunger as needed.
  • Replenish all restroom supplies, remove trash, replace liners
  • Clean and disinfect suite, and common kitchens, counters, cabinets, stoves, sinks, refrigerators
  • Clean and prepare guest rooms, student rooms, and transient rooms as required for move-in/out; wash and fold linen
  • Sweep, vacuum, and wet mop floors and stairs in assigned areas
  • Strip and wax, and buff floors as required. Spot clean and shampoo carpets as required
  • Wash, clean, and polish mirrors, glass, brass, walls, and doors daily
  • Dust and damp wash window sills, moldings, fixtures, handrails, banisters, doors, trims, frames, ledges, edges, and public phones
  • Clean and wet mop basements, laundry, suite, bathroom, and/or kitchen areas in all buildings
  • Wash corridor, suite, and bathroom window sills, glass in doors, and /or surfaces (inside & outside) as required
  • Monitor supply and equipment inventory; report needs to supervisor
  • Respond to maintenance requests
  • Snow removal from sidewalks, entrances, courtyards, and roofs
  • Move heavy furniture, supplies, and miscellaneous equipment as directed
  • Monitor the need for light tray/bulb replacements in one's assigned area replace, and or report to the appropriate supervisor
  • Report immediately to supervisors any building conditions that may affect the safety, security, or property of residents; accurately complete written work requests as required
  • Inform supervisors of any problems necessitating outside contractors
  • Wear a beeper or radio at all times during shifts, keep supervisors informed of your location; check with the department for problems, work orders, etc.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school education or GED
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to work cooperatively and effectively with supervisors, staff and students, and faculty, as well as independently
  • Ability to perform effective cleaning techniques and operate cleaning equipment including scrubbing and waxing
  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects (minimum of 50 pounds) on a regular basis with efficiency
  • Physical mobility (stooping, bending, kneeling, lifting, standing, walking, climbing, twisting, stretching, reaching), and vision and hearing acuity appropriate to the efficient and effective cleaning workstation tasks and reception of oral and written instructions and communication
  • Ability and willingness to update knowledge of cleaning products, materials, and cleaning machines; current health and safety practices and standards
  • Compactor experience
  • Work effectively under time pressure
  • Ability and fitness to do the job, including the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and climb ladders up to 25 feet.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced knowledge of project cleaning equipment.
  • 5 years of work with hazardous chemicals.
  • 7 years experience in stripping and waxing floors, extracting carpets, and cutting hard floor surfaces.

Salary Range:

$24.97 - $24.97
