Job Summary/Basic Function:
Reporting to the Vice President, Institutional Advancement, the Assistant Vice President of Advancement Operations is a new leadership role in the Office of Institutional Advancement at Teachers College, Columbia University (Teachers College or TC). We are looking for an experienced, detail-oriented, and creative leader with stellar listening skills and a proven track record developing, nurturing, facilitating, and reinforcing best practices around operations and technical applications. The Assistant Vice President of Advancement Operations provides supervision and direction to team members furthering the mission of Teachers College through the goals of Institutional Advancement. Leads the overall strategy for Advancement Services, Research, Analytics/Reporting, Data Quality, Prospect Management and Business Management. Works closely with all levels of staff, including senior management, in Institutional Advancement and the College. Supports the Vice President of Institutional Advancement with all operational matters as assigned.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience with project planning and management, data and analytics reporting, database management, and must be comfortable collaborating with multiple stakeholders and executive leadership.

Key stakeholders and partners internally include, but are not limited to, senior leaders of the College, members of Institutional Advancement, Controller’s office, the Office of Budget and Finance, the Office of Enrollment Management including Admissions and Financial Aid. External stakeholders include a network of vendors and peers at both Columbia University and other institutions of higher education.

Must have strong competency in reporting and data analytics and must have strong proficiency in CRM systems and reporting. Must be current with Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), Voluntary Support of Education Survey (VSE), state and federal legislation, and all industry best practices. Must ensure the Division remains current with CASE reporting standards and IRS rules and regulations pertaining to Advancement.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent experience.
  • Ten years minimum experience with analytics, advancement operations, financial management and finance systems.
  • Eight to ten years managing and/or using Raisers’ Edge NXT or similar Advancement system is required.
  • Experience with CRM data conversion required
  • Demonstrated success in change management in a large, complex nonprofit environment
  • Experience in supervising or collaborating with both technical and non-technical peers.
  • Must have in-depth knowledge and experience working with Advancement systems.
  • Must have in-depth knowledge of and demonstrated experience with reporting applications and languages.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with leadership and executives at all levels in the organization.
  • Excellent judgment and problem-solving skills are essential.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with both technical and non-technical staff.
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to diagnose and resolve complex issues.
  • Highest level of customer service skills and expertise.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and to evaluate multiple perspectives of problems and subsequent decisions.
  • Ability to negotiate contracts and support with software vendors and TCIT.
  • Must be able to work diplomatically with vendor and College partners while protecting the interests of Institutional Advancement.
  • Ability to analyze financial transactions and their relationship to Advancement information.
  • Ability to quickly learn, interpret and apply a variety of complex policies and procedures.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines.
  • Proven skills in continuous process improvement.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evening and weekends as needed.
  • Knowledge Demonstrated knowledge of Advancement Operations best practices in prospect management, systems, report development and quality assurance, including user requirement collection, testing and production release management.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree is a plus.
  • Eight to ten years’ experience in Advancement Operations, Alumni Relations and/or Development; within higher education preferred.
  • Experience with the standards and regulations governing gift/donor records, data privacy and security and prospect management is preferred.
  • Knowledge of CASE standards and Advancement Services best practices is preferred.

Salary Range:

$176,000 - $204,000

The salary range reflects the College’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the compensation for the position at the time of the job posting.  Salary decisions are dependent on several factors including but not limited to market and organizational considerations, experience, and qualifications of a selected candidate as well as internal and external equity.

Teachers College maintains a hybrid work environment, which provides employees with flexible work arrangements, while ensuring we preserve the important aspects of our unique in-person college-campus culture. Depending on role and business needs, colleagues will either work onsite or in a hybrid model (combination of in-office and virtual days). Employees are expected to live within a 150-mile radius of the College.
